Sweden's Parliament joined Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, and Spain today and voted overwhelmingly in favor of same-sex marriage rights. Though Sweden has registered gay relationships and allowed gay couples to adopt for years, today’s vote “means that gender no longer has an impact on the ability to marry and that the law on registered partnership is repealed,” according to a Swedish government website.
So starting May 1st, you can wish your married gay Swedish friends “lyckönskningar till ert bröllop” ("congratulations on your marriage") or "Grattis på din bröllopsdag" (same) or maybe just “gratulerar” ("congratulations") if you want to be brief about it.
Or you might just find it easier to go to Ikea and get them a nice gift. Skål!
Until next time, a sweet and long life to you all.
