Minnesota author Tim O’Brien is scheduled to lecture on March 19th and 20th as part of the Hennepin County Library Foundation’s Pen Pals series. Austin born and Macalester educated, O’Brien’s writing centers on his experiences in the Vietnam War, beginning in 1973 with If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, an autobiographical look at his time in the war.

In 1978, O’Brien won the National Book Award for the novel, Going After Cacciato. He continued to garner acclaim for his war stories, establishing himself among the most revered writers to publish accounts of experiences in Vietnam.

If you went to high school any time after 1990, you probably spent more than one class period agonizing over the soldiers’ burdens in “The Things They Carried,” a short story about the physical and mental sufferings of the members of Alpha Company.

These are three of his best known works, though by no means his only notable publications. He continues to write at his home in Worthington, MN, and he teaches creative writing at the nearby Minnesota West Technical College.

The lectures will take place at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and tickets are still available for both appearances. Tickets are $15 for students with a valid ID, and $35-$45 for adults.
