The weather continues to exceed expectations and Day 4 was no exception. Many of the British faithful waited hours in the sun, until close to supper time to see their great Scottish hope, third seed Andy Murray.
What most thought might be a testy exchange between competitors who don't particularly care for each other turned into a rout as Murray took only three sets to dispatch Latvian, Ernests Gulbis, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.
Sixth seed Andy Roddick repeated his first round experience as he lost the third set of his match and then proceeded to cruise through the fourth and take the win. He beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia by the score of 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
But the big upset of the day on the men's side was the loss by fifth seed, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina to fan favorite, Lleyton Hewitt. It only took the Australian three sets to oust del Potro who just doesn't seem to be able to master the grass at Wimbledon. This is the third year in a row he has failed to advance past the second round. Hewitt was partying like it was 1999 all over again.
On the women's side of the tournament Venus Williams barely broke a sweat in her two set victory over Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine, 6-3 and 6-2. Ana Ivanovic showed more confidence as she dispatched Italian, Sara Errani in two sets, 7-5 and 6-1.
Both top seed Dinara Safina and current French Open champ, Svetlana Kuznetsova cruised past their second round opponents in two sets. Safina beat Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay, 6-3, 7-5, and Kuznetsova only took 59 minutes to beat Pauline Parmentier, 6-1, 6-3.
The women's doubles competition kicked off its first round matches and if you haven't seen the Williams sisters play together and you enjoy their singles' game, I strongly suggest you tune in. You'll become a fan of the doubles' game and wonder like me why more top ranked players don't play both. Venus and Serena took their first match in two sets.
