I have to hand it to that young man who did his best on Sunday to maintain his dignity and equilibrium in the midst of what was a dreadful idea by some producer.
There sat Quan Cosby, former Texas Longhorn wide receiver and NFL draft hopeful. Next to him was the reporter Erin Andrews and on the other side of Andrews sat Bill Cosby in a football helmet. See video below.
The shtick went like this: Dr. Cosby, as young Quan kept calling him contacted the footballer to ask if he wanted to watch the NFL Draft with him. Bill's explanation for it all was, oh I don't know, impossible to decipher perhaps?
ESPN took the opportunity to try and fill some time in its interminable two days of coverage of the draft and got the two Cosby men together on screen to watch the later rounds.
Quan kept checking his phone to see if anyone from the NFL was calling. Once or twice he put the phone to his ear, ostensibly speaking with someone in the know. Andrews would take attention away from Dr. Cosby and pointedly ask if he was about to break big news on the live set-up. Unfortunately for the segment the young man couldn't give us good news.
And we were left with Andrews convincing Bill to put on a football helmet and try and be funny while recounting why he stuck his nose into the young man's life, how he loved football and what he hoped would happen as a result of all the fuss about the former Longhorn.
The most painful moment was when Andrews asked Bill to give young Quan advice on how to handle potential disappointment. There's always Canadian football was his retort. The silence was deafening.
But then came the news on Monday that after all the draft hoopla, young Cosby was invited to sign a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent. He accepted of course and he'll be off to see if he can hook on with a club that has put up with the antics of Chad Ochocinco for years now.
Our Texas Longhorns Examiner has a high opinion of Quan Cosby and gives us a bit of his sports pedigree as baseball minor leaguer.
If that is what you have to do to get signed up by a football club I guess it isn't so bad. But what the heck did the elder Cosby do it for? Still a mystery to me.
