In the Deal Book blog on the New York Times web site, there is a report about communication between Mark Cuban and the staff of the SEC's Enforcement Division. During its investigation into Cuban's sale of stock in mamma.com, he was taken to task for his financial stake in a series of documentaries entitled "Loose Change."
The films make a case for a conspiracy among individuals in the U.S. government that helped bring about the destruction of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.
Deal Book printed what it characterized as a "purported email" from the SEC staff that copies the SEC Chairman, Christopher Cox, former U.S. Representative from Orange County, California. The reason the geography is pertinent seems to be the proximity of Mr. Cox's former congressional district to Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The email includes speculation by the staffer that Chairman Cox is not only a Republican appointee of President Bush but possibly a Lakers fan. I guess that means the staffer presumes Cox won't be sympathetic to Cuban's protestations of innocence. Does the word "loser" come to mind when you think about this agency staff person? It does to me.
Once the government engaged in any discussion about Mr. Cuban's political leanings it isn't a surprise that he would be livid. I now understand his truculence and his lack of the usual respect a defendant shows the government agency that is suing him.
