Since 1936, you could count on one thing about American politics; the Washington Redskins had something to do with the outcome of the presidential election. That's right, you heard me. For 68 years through 17 elections you could be an all-knowing seer for your friends and family if you kept abreast of the Redskins' score on the Sunday or Monday prior to election day.
If the Redskins lost, the incumbent party inevitably lost as well. In the election of 2000, the country could have avoided six weeks of a potential constitutional crisis had it just decided to use the Redskins loss to the Tennessee Titans as the deciding factor. There would have been no need to get the Supreme Court involved and have a 4-3 decision make many believe the election was stolen by the Republicans. I don't know anyone who would have argued with the "Redskins Meter."
But 2004 changed everything. The Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers by a score of 28-14. John Kerry was giddy and getting ready for that speech of a lifetime when he would accept the concession of George W. Bush. Well, we all know how that turned out.
So what's a girl to do now? You think you have found a stable relationship that can be counted on through thick and thin, and of course like many others in this girl's life it all went sour without notice. This year the Redskins play the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 3rd. Can I believe that all will be patched up and there will be no more fumbling of the football of responsibility? With a winning percentage of close to 95% it's as sure a thing as you can get....well, now that Tim Donaghy is in prison.
