Gau Jal, or Cow Water, is being touted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), India’s foremost Hindu cultural group,as a healthy alternative to major soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi. The Indian city of Haridwar, a holy city on the River Ganges, where the group’s research center is located, will be the marketing center for the product.
Cows are worshipped by Hindus and revered for their dairy products but many Indians also consume cow dung and urine. In some states, cow urine and dung are sold along with milk and yogurt, and porridge, toothpaste and tonic beverages claiming to cure a range of ailments, from diabetes to cancer. Cow urine is supposed to be a disinfectant and dung is used in villages as a clean, antiseptic covering for dirt floors.
Now, the RSS's Cow Protection Department has invented a new urine-based soft drink it hopes will promote its health-giving properties to a wider market. "We refer to gau ark (cow urine) as gau jal (cow water) as it has immense potential to cure various diseases. We have developed a soft drink formula with gau jal as the base and it has been sent to a laboratory at Lucknow for testing," said director Om Prakash.
The RSS’s new urine-based soft drink has the potential to cure many diseases, according to RSS director Om Prakesh. The team is working on packaging, marketing and preserving the drink so that it will not smell bad in the heat of summer.
“The acceptance of cow urine as a potent medicine is increasing day by day and once it comes as a cold drink, its demand will definitely increase,” said Mr. Prakesh. “It will prove and justify the high stature accorded to a cow in Indian culture."
We think we can come up with some great names for this new drink. Any suggestions?
