We forget leather has an origin.  To consumers, leather, fur, and animal-derived materials are nothing more than a magically-appearing substance from which clothing, and less essential products are made.

Case in point, leather band-aids (right).

The visible part of the band-aids are produced from 100% leather and at $18 for a pack of three are meant to allow the skin to "breathe better."

They have to kill the cow anyway, don't they?

The use of non-meat animal products like leather is often defended with the oversimplified idea that the leather we use comes from cows who are killed for meat.  If we didn't use the leather, we'd just be plain wasteful.

This misnomer is a perfect idea to illustrate the "factory" confusion of individuals.  It is a popular belief that animals are troubled because we put them in factory settings.  The public believes the responsible way to eat and use animals is from local, free-roaming farms.

However, adding a factory setting to the exploitation of animals is like playing loud music during a murder.  Of course it's better without but is it "humane" to have silent murders?  While animals may enjoy some of the free-roaming lifestyle (be careful of drawing this conclusion, "free roaming" may mean there is a small outside enclosure attached to a large shed where animals may move to "freely roam.")  their mere existence implies they have been genetically manipulated to grow in a way which ensures maximum food/labor products rather than optimal health.

These animals will inevitably face death as well, even if we are considering animals for dairy production or non-flesh.  When animals are property, their worth becomes that of flesh animals when it ends as that of a laborer.  The care of animals is limited by our need to use them as property.

Animal property is a commodity of labor, chemicals, food, entertainment, and clothing.  They are not "meat" animals whose remains are philanthropically used for production of further goods.  Rather they are a resource to be used to the highest extent of profitability.  It is essential that we not only eat vegan be be vegan by understanding this fundamental concept.

Animals do not exist in factories, animals are factories.
