Friday July 10, The Chicago Underground Library is having a pre-Printers’ Ball party featuring catapaults, volcanoes, a giant paper ball, debutantes and a science fair. “The Science of Obscurity” will feature writers with new, unpublished and in-progress works all dressed up as science fair experiments. "Join a dozen local, national, and international writers as they intricately explain the scientific principles underlying their work, real or imagined. Dioramas! Volcanoes! Colorful graphs! Higher mathematics!"
Outside of the Jupiter Outpost (1139 W. Fulton Market), a cafe, in the industrial zone of Fulton Market, “writers, publishers, bookmaker, or booklover of any stripe who has recently finished writing a book, has published a book in the past year, or just feels like taking out some aggression on a publication of your choice” will be invited to hoist their materials into a four-foot catapult to be launched into the street. There will be a shredder where you can shred rejection letters. Debutantes will parade around with the CUL's new artist-designed submission boxes, which will be placed around the city for donations. Come one, come all, there’ll be prizes, there’ll be raffles, there’ll be a catapult! It’s free and open for all ages.
I could use this summer catharsis. As excited as I am for the event, it leaves me with one question: what the hell is the Chicago Underground Library?
Stay posted for an exclusive Friday Feature interview with CUL Director, Fake Librarian, Nell Taylor.
