MLS power rankings week 14

1. Houston Dynamo (-): So much for parity.

2. Colorado Rapids (+4): Beating DC United 3-0 is nothing to sneeze at, so this former wild card team is hardly a gamble when FC Dallas comes to visit.

3. DC United (-1): A Wednesday 3-3 tie with Seattle and a Saturday 3-0 loss to the Rapids mostly indicates that two games in a four-day period is too much. They have an Open Cup bye week now to rest veterans and give the bench players a run-out. DCU is still the league leader with 25 goals scored, but also have allowed 24.

4. Chicago Fire (-1): SuperLiga. The Fire have a bye week with SuperLiga, and the initial 1-0 result over San Luis is a good start for the Chicago team.

5. Chivas USA (-): SuperLiga. Chivas lost to 2-1 to Tigres in SuperLiga, but played a good competitive match. Jorge Flores and Eduardo Lillingston are respectable players.

6. Columbus Crew (-2): Losing 2-1 to Dallas is not a feather in their cap, but Guillermo Barros Schelloto will propel this team upwards and coach Robert Warzycha appears to have won the confidence of his players.

7. Kansas City Wizards (-1): SuperLiga. The Wizards pulled a 0-0 draw with San Luis and smoked the Revolution in league play the week before. The odds are with KC when they meet the Revs in SuperLiga without seven of their starters, lost to injury. There’s a rumor circulating that Mass General is opening a special unit just for Revolution players.

8. Seattle Sounders (-): Tieing both DC United 3-3 and the Red Bulls 1-1? It’s not clear in what direction mid-season ennui will drift the Sounders.

9. Real Salt Lake (+2): Leveling Houston 1-1 is more than a fluke because Houston is letting nothing go easy.

10. Toronto FC (-1): This week Toronto face the Red Bulls in a predictable win and RSL with a likely draw.

11. New England Revolution (-1): SuperLiga. Fortunately, the Revolution have a bye week with SuperLiga, from which they pulled a good-looking 4-2 win over Santos Laguna. New England are missing Shalrie Joseph, Taylor Twellman, Gabriel Badilla, Chris Albright, Mauricio Castro, Steve Ralston, and Kevin Alston all to injuries. That’s right, they’re missing seven of their 11 starters.

12. FC Dallas (+1): Beating Columbus 2-1 is the highlight of the Dallas season so far, but there were plenty of mistakes they can’t afford to make when they visit the Rapids this week.

13. San Jose Earthquakes (+1): Where has Darren Huckerby been all season? San Jose had a convincing 2-1 win over LA and now they have a bye week to figure out what they did right.

14. LA Galaxy (-2): This team just doesn’t look interested in competing.

15. New York Red Bulls (-): Angel’s goal leveling the Seattle match gave the Red Bulls the hope they desperately need playing away games at Toronto and Columbus this week. NY has the fewest goals scored in the league (14) and second to most allowed (25).
