Blues in the burbs

October 10, 11:07 AM

The Bad Idea Band at Worth's Pump Room
"Killer" Ray Allison
Weekend blues in Chicago often start at nine or even ten at night.  This gives you time for a nap after work.  Today, I'm going to point out some out-of-the-way blues gigs to consider.  In the Southwest suburb of Worth, there is a bar called the Pump Room (6908 West 111th Street).  The Bad Idea Rhythm & Blues Band makes a return visit to the Pump.  Ray "The Flame" Sukash will have Killer Ray Allison helping out tonight.  These two Rays and the rest of the band are always a party.  I've seen this band many times and have seen them in this venue, and I can tell you it's a sure thing.  In Wilmette on the other end of our world, Mr. G will bring his Mystery Band to C.J. Arthurs (1168 Wilmette Avenue in Wilmette).  While I don't frequent Wilmette too often, I can tell you Mr. G has gotten me as far North as Evanston.  That means he and his mysteries are worth the trip.  I happen to know that the guitarist mystery has been solved and it is the great Osee Anderson.

The best blues bar in Chicagoland

October 1, 11:45 AM
Over the years of covering live blues music in and around Chicago, I have seen many venues come and go.  It seems to me that the openings have not kept pace with the closings.  Even with that attrition, the Chicago land area still has many... Read More

Blues in White Sox and Cub territory

September 25, 9:38 PM
The Cubs have clinched their division, or so I heard.  My White Sox are not in yet, but at least they're making it interesting.  When I was a kid on the South side I thought everyone was a White Sox fan.  For that matter, I thought everyone... Read More

Different blues venues and a memorial to a blues friend

September 19, 11:07 AM
How does your dance card look for this weekend?  A glance at the Chicago Blues Beat calendar shows we will have a typical great weekend of live blues in the Windy City.  Like the skyline and the lakefront, we tend to take this abundance for... Read More

Lubriphonic greases up B.L.U.E.S.

September 16, 7:27 AM
B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted features two bands on Tuesday evenings. One night, Big Rob Blaine aptly filled the early slot. The second band was a lesson in prejudice for me. Much of the information posted about Lubriphonic tags them as a jam band. I don't like... Read More

Vote for live Blues in Chicago

September 11, 11:16 PM
Are you tired of all the political stuff yet?  I already know who I intend to vote for.  We have all heard fellow citizens bemoan the lack of choices so they want the lesser of two evils.  The hypercynics think they're making a statement... Read More

Mr. G & The Mystery Band at Bill's Blues

September 8, 6:46 PM
.floatright { float:right}.floatleft { float:left}It's not too often that I get up to Bill's Blues in Evanston, but Osee Anderson was to record a live show and that would be worth the trip. Evanston is a North suburb of Chicago. It is nestled between... Read More

This weekend's blues shows: It's time to decide

September 4, 6:37 PM
Help me choose the blues agenda for this weekend. Rod Piazza is touring through Chicago with his Mighty Flyers. They will be at Buddy Guy's Legends. I don't get to see Rod much as he isn't part of the local talent pool. That's one condsideration.... Read More

Missing the Blues gives me the blues

September 1, 2:23 PM
I missed the blues. Circumstances beyond my control forced me to take a leave of absence from my avocation of supporting live blues music in Chicago. It was ironic how being away from the blues, gives me the blues. Just as with my time... Read More
