Beer highlights at the DNCDo you think the delegates arriving in Denver for the Democratic National Convention in August are only here to play serious politics?  Think again.  When it comes to getting down to business you can be sure that drinking a good old American beer during the DNC won't be far behind.  Many of the Colorado breweries and local watering holes are busy getting ready for all of the media and crowds that will be pouring into downtown Denver.  All work and no play could make those Democrats a dull crowd, but fear not!  There will be plenty of suds flowing during convention week.   Here are a few highlights of what you can expect to be happening during the DNC in the world of beer.

Great Divide Welcomes the DNC - Gets LIberally Hopped

The Democratic National Convention is right around the corner (fomr the brewery, that is).  Great Divide has been brewing quality craft beer in Downtown Denver for fourteen years and wants to welcome all DNC attendees to the neighborhood.  Production will be in full swing, and they will be giving brewery tours.  They even have event space available for rent.  Be sure to look for their Liberally Hopped American Pale Ale, which will be available on tap in local bars.  This limited-release American-style pale ale is described as "superbly refreshing, medium-bodied, light copper in color, and liberally hopped with some of our favorite American varieties".  Visit the website at:  www.greatdivide.com

Avery Rolls Out - "Ale to the Chief"

Avery Brewing Company of Boulder is preparing to "celebrate the last day in office of our current Commander in Chief and welcome in a new one".  And to do so, they have brewed up a truely patriotic ale - "Ale to the Chief".  This special one time only brew will be available all over downtown Denver during the Democratic National Convention and throughout the campaign season.  This is no ordinary beer, as it is being billed as a big, bold ale with a big 8.75% alcohol punch.  Avery bills this as a "non-partisan beer" and isn't taking sides on the election, but you can be sure there will be plenty of this brew available for all of the delegates who want to try it.   Visit their website at:  www.averybrewing.com

Breckenridge Brewery to help transform Pepsi Center Eatery

Breckenridge Brewery is busy  staffing up and getting ready for the DNC.  Their downtown restaurants and pubs will be gearing up for the crowds.  Not only that, but the Breck crew has been named the exclusive beer provider to the CNN Grill at the Pepsi Center.  Brooklyn's restaurant is being temporarily rebranded at the Pepsi Center during the DNC as the "CNN Grill" and all beers provided will be Breckenridge beers exclusively.   Breckenridge Brewing is putting out a special brew just for the CNN Grill and the DNC called CNN Brew - which by the way will be a Red Ale.  Visit their website at:  www.breckenridgebrewery.com

Russian River Debuts Brews at Falling Rock Tap House

The seemingly impossible brews to get here in Colorado are coming to Denver just in time for the DNC.  Russian River Brewing of California has announced that at long last their highly praised beers will be available for sale in Colorado for the first time starting in late August.  To celebrate this event, the Falling Rock Tap House will host a tapping of several Russian River brews at 5pm on August 20th.  A beer dinner with Russian River is also planned for the 19th. Featured brews will be: Blind Pig IPAPliny the Elder (yes Pliny!), and Damnation.  All of which will become a regular feature on tap.  Also for the event  special kegs of Supplication and Happy Hops (Blonde Ale) will be available for sampling.  Colorado beer drinkers and DNC delegates alike will surely celebrate this news as Russian River has been a fan favorite of the Great American Beer Festival for several years running.  Visit the Falling Rock website:  www.fallingrocktaphouse.com

Coors to donate bio-fuel and provide beer for the DNC

Not to be forgotten is one of the biggest breweries in Colorado.  Coors (now part of the new MillerCoors mega-brewer) is donating E-85 bio-fuel for the DNC and their 450 GM flex-fuel vehicles during the convention. Coors produces the ethanol based fuel as a by-product of their waste brew.  Coors is the nations 1st big brewer to turn waste brew into ethanol.  They produce over 3 million gallons of the fuel a year.  Coors is also providing all the beer for select DNC Host Committee convention and pre-convention events, meetiings, media briefings and VIP events - afterall, Coors is a Presidential level sponsor of the DNC Host Committee.   Dems like their American beer!  More info:  www.millercoors.com

Other Colorado Companies Sponsoring the DNC

If you look through the big list of corporate sponsors for the DNC, you'll find a couple of familiar names on the list.  Companies like Argonaut Wine & Liquor are DNC Host Committee Founder sponsors. The Mayor Hick's Wynkoop Brewing Company is a Host Committee sponsoring Member. According to Charlie Papazian's column, Wynkoop will be offering up a special "Obamanator" Maibock strong brew just for the DNC.   Apparently breweries and liquor stores have strong foundations in forging this great country of ours!
