There was so much music going on at The Evening Muse during this early show that its hard to keep straight in my mind who was doing what with whom! These three musicians on tour together is pure musical ecstasy, that's for darn sure! It's not often that three nationally recognized musicians get into the same schedule, but these three are friends from way back and it shows - not only in the ease with which they support each other but also in the friendly banter that only occurs between real friends.
First up was singer-songwriter Anya Marina. Anya was the self-proclaimed warm-up to the real show. I got the feeling there was more to that as an inside joke between the musicians but it never came to clarity. One thing is for certain, she was more than a warm-up, she's the real deal among her peers. Using her I-Pod for some background during several songs, Anya was able to reproduce her unique sound on the stage of the Evening Muse. With her sultry voice and Euro-pop melodies and tempo I found her reminiscent of vintage roaring 20's cabaret at times. Anya's sound is very difficult to describe and I'd bet if you had 10 people together describing it the conversation would be very much like 10 people describing a fine wine. Every opinion would be slightly different, but the love would be unanimous. She remind this old guy of the valley girls of the 90's, melodic in tone and humorous in content. Almost like conversing in prose. Check out some tunes from Anya's new CD - "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II" at her MySpace page. Photos of Anya's performance.

Jay Nash was second up in this all-star line-up. Jay's voice reminds me of a fathers voice - rich clarity, smooth & tender, and very powerful. Jay performed songs from his new CD titled "The Things You Think You Need" as well as from his previous CD's such as "Over You", "Some Kind Of Comfort"and "A Stream Up North". Each ballad telling a different story of experience, travel, learning and a few heartbreaks along the way. Jay has a sound that is like a pollination of country, folk & rock - it's very easy to listen to and very comforting. Check out some sample at his MySpace Page. Photos of Jay's performance.

Greg Laswell completed the trio that were touring together and was third up for the early show. I swear this night felt like a Friday night! It was a true party. Greg is an accomplished musician with multiple musical credits in popular TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy, True Blood, Shark, The Hills, Without A Trace, and Cold Case among others. Accompanied by Danish Drummer Frederik Bokkenheuser and his touring friends above, Greg serenaded the very full Evening Muse with many of his tunes from his recent CD titled "Three Flights From Alto Nido". It's always great to see artists having a great time - it translates into the best shows and a fulfilling evening of music experienced by everyone in attendance. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was a great example of having a good time sharing with an audience! I liked his ballads as he played the keyboards and I loved the closing song as Greg was joined by all of the above musicians on stage. You can check out samples of Greg's work on his MySpace page. Chicago based singer-songwriter David McMillin was last up during the early show at The Muse. David was in town promoting his new CD "Heartsteady" with an in-studio performance at 106.5 FM The End. As an Indie/Folk musician David shared a few tunes from his new CD during this short set. His powerful voice lends itself nicely to his soulful ballads. David asked Ed Romanoff to join him on stage for his last song, which was most enjoyable. Check David out at his MySpace page. Photos of David McMillin's set.
Cheers,
