The first Wednesday of every month beginning at 8PM the Tosco House Party is hosted by John Tosco at the Evening Muse. Most of the time the term "open mic" suggests a less than stellar night of music. If you've been to a Tosco House Party, you know that the room will be filled with people waiting to see what surprises lay ahead in the next two hours. There's always a few outstanding performances, occasionally a very unique display of musicianship, and usually at least one WOW factor artist sneaks up on us at the show. The best part is the anticipation because you usually don't know who is going to do what.
The November House Party did not disappoint. There was the unique, the outstanding, and the WOW. Following was the line-up:
Eddie Ferrell was accompanied by his son Ben. Eddie played some very unusual (for me at least) handmade wooden wind instruments of varying sizes and sound.
A rather meek looking Holly Andrews took the stage and blasted the audience with a rocker vocal/guitar performance.
A couple of guys named Dan - calling themselves "Double D" were up next. The tall Dan provided some very smooth rock vocals reminiscent in sound and tempo of legendary 70's & 80's rock stars. The other Dan provided the guitar accompaniment for the song. For me this duo stood out as a performance I'll remember and look for in the future.
David Sims performed a CCR tune with a Joe Cocker sound to his voice. He was joined by John Tosco on guitar.
A well known and very talented guitarist named Desmond Myers accompanied Lorenzo Zapata as Lorenzo shared his powerful voice. The WOW in this is that the vocalist is in the 7th grade. What followed was equally impressive as Azul Zapata - yes, the older sister of Lorenzo - took the stage and shared an angelic vocal performance. This talent definitely runs in the family.
The local country influenced duo Porchdog took the stage next. Porchdog performed at the Sept House Party and its obvious they've been performing some over the past 2 months as they were much more confident and comfortable. Their sound was great on both occasions - but they had more fun tonight!
Songwriter and long time contributor to the Tosco House Party, Wes Robinson, shared a sweet ballad and guitar serenade.
Songwriter, Dave May, performed a song he has recently written about his favorite street in Key West - Elizabeth Street. A catchy tune about the party spot that Key West is known to be.
Jimmy Atto shared a ballad he has written. Jimmy is passing through town visiting a friend as he heads home to Michigan. Stopped in to the Muse and wanted to share his talent. We're glad he did.
The major WOW factor of the night cam next as Haji Basim took the stage. A powerful, smooth, richly toned vocal performance that in all honesty didn't need a microphone had the crowd gasping as Haji progressed through his song. We knew we had just seen something special and hope to hear it again soon and often. Haji is a recent addition to Charlotte as he moved here a few weeks ago. He hasn't wasted any time getting in touch with the music scene as he is hosting an open mic night on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday nights @ Amalie's Bakery.
Singer Kerrie Protaservich shyly took the stage next - Haji would have intimidated anyone who had to follow his act so hats off to Kerrie for stepping up!! Kerrie has a lovely voice and had the audience behind her too.
Malia Sautu sang a song by Liz Wright titled "Open Your Eye's". Another powerful voice on this night of what seemed like a vocal showcase evening.
Ralph Husband ended the party with an instrumental guitar rendition of Mason Williams "Classical Gas" - one of the harder songs to master on the guitar.
So in less than 2 hours we were treated to 15 performances by some very talented singers, songwriters and musicians - all for $2. That's a deal you can't beat anywhere!
Great music in an intimate setting that is indeed very much like your living room - the Tosco House Party is a monthly event that you should put on your calendar. You'll be glad you did. Leigh Stevens held a local music meetup at the show tonight introducing the muse and the house party to several like minded local music lovers whom I know enjoyed themselves - well done Leigh!
Keepin' it live!
