Contrary to the mantra of the Left that the U.S. healthcare system is 'broken' and in dire need of a government 'fix,' the facts show that ours is the best healthcare system in the world. The vast majority of our citizens have access to care and are insured either through their employers or through private policies that they themselves purchase. And the care that they receive is far superior to that which is provided in countries with a so-called 'single-payer system.'
Even in countries where healthcare for all is mandated by a government-run system, not all receive care. Rationing is a large part of such a system, and decisions are made by bureaucrats invested with saving the government money to deny care to certain members of the population.
Daniel Hannan, the member of Parliament in Great Britain who gave Prime Minister Gordon Brown a tongue-lashing, stated on the Glenn Beck program yesterday that a central committee that oversees delivery of care in the government-run healthcare system routinely denies care to citizens who are deemed too old or too sick to merit healthcare. Mr. Hannan stated that for the United States to model its healthcare system on the British, Canadian, or French models would be a major mistake.
According to the National Center for Policy Analysis, there are 10 surprising facts about the U.S. healthcare system that should be carefully considered before the nation goes jumping over into the abyss of nationalized care. Here is a brief run-down of those facts:
