Barack Obama is receiving widespread criticism for his handling of the news of the mass murders at Fort Hood in Texas yesterday.  One NBC affiliate is referring to it as Obama's 'awful moment' and goes further to call attention to the President's 'frightening lack of sensitivity.'

The U.S. Army should also be placed under intense scrutiny for continually ignoring a series of highly troubling red flags exhibited by the behavior and statements of the officer who did the shooting, going back a number of years to just after the attacks on 9/11.

As this report shows, a most troubling portrait has emerged of Nidal Malik Hasan, the army major and psychiatrist who himself exhibited overt emotional instability in the aftermath of 9/11.

Basically the man harshly condemned the use of the military in Iraq and Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups who contributed to the attacks on 9/11.

In time, Hasan made a series of requests to be discharged from his service in the military.  The Army should have obliged him.  It is the height of denial to claim that such emotional outbursts against the United States and its war on terror would not eventually result in some sort of major breakdown.

Sadly and tragically that breakdown occurred just as Hasan was preparing to be deployed to the war region--a breakdown that resulted in the needless and senseless loss of life and horrific injury to fellow soldiers.

The military, for example, was aware that within the last 6 months Hasan had spoken of suicide bombings and other threats.  Where, exactly, do such notions originate?  Radical Islam that is engaged in the Jihad.  To claim that this is not so is utter denial.

It is also well-known to counterterrorism officials that radical Islam actively recruits persons to infiltrate the U.S. military, or engages Muslims who are already serving in the military to join the Jihad.  Some, though not all, U.S. mosques serve as recruiting centers for such extremist activity.

So let's recap for a moment.

Barack Obama has shown that he is shockingly detached and out of touch with America by his handling of this senseless tragedy.  Even the Democrat-controlled Congress continued its session with only a 'brief moment of silence.'  And the U.S. Army should have paid attention to the many red flags exhibited by the perpetrator in this mass murder.

The Verdict?  Everyone in government--the President, the Congress, and the military were either asleep at the wheel or acted as if they didn't care.

How's that 'hope and change' working out for ya?
