District attorney running for Congress receives death threat

A conservative district attorney who is running for Congress has received threats against his life.

The 'circuit solicitor' (or 'district attorney') for the 7th circuit in the state of South Carolina, Trey Gowdy, and his assistant circuit solicitor, both received hand-written death threats in the mail.

Gowdy is a long-time prosecuting attorney for the state who is seeking to wrest the nomination away from current 4th District Congressman Bob Inglis, R-SC.

With his penchant for supporting measures that have raised the ire of many of his constituents, Inglis has not exactly been a conservative's dream in this very conservative sector of South Carolina.

The 4th District encompasses the Greenville-Spartanburg area, the bustling economic center of the upstate region just below the mountains of North Carolina.  Greenville County is considered one of the most thoroughly conservative Republican areas of the state.

Inglis, however, has run into problems with constituents over his votes on the Iraq War and other issues.  Conservatives have been demanding that the GOP put up a candidate that more thoroughly represents their views, and they just may have found one in Gowdy.

However, as is the case with high profile public figures, especially those who not only have been engaged in prosecuting criminals but also running for public office, Gowdy has become a target of at least one criminal who is behind bars in South Carolina.

Jermaine Nelson, who is serving a 10-year sentence for burglary,  threatened to kill Gowdy and his assistant in a letter that was intercepted by law enforcement officials.

To his credit, Gowdy says that he is not frightened by such threats.  And it stands to reason.  He has seen and heard it all--and worse--in his 15-year career as a federal prosecutor and a circuit solicitor.

And the other news about Gowdy that should be of interest to firearms enthusiasts--he is unashamed about letting it be known that he carries.

While it remains to be seen if Gowdy is the one to take the GOP nomination away from Bob Inglis, it is at least of some comfort knowing that one of our state leaders, and a potential U.S. Congressman, believes in carrying a gun.
