This is part two of a two part interview with Nina May, owner and creator of There's Magic In The Air blog site. The interview was conducted electronically; questions were emailed to Nina and she wrote out her responses. Nina started her blog to explore digital design while working on her own photopolymer stamp line.
Q: How do you decide what to draw and feature?
A: If I could only draw as fast as the ideas that pass through this head, I would have hundreds of images by now. I am constantly having ideas come to mind, but my main thing right now is to show people that I have a lot to offer in a wide range of my art images. I realize that not every image will be attractive to everyone. I think that is the main thing I love about my images. Even though I am the only one drawing them, I am out to offer a wide variety, not necessarily all just "cutsie". I personally want to offer a wide range of my original art so when people come to shop they have just that, variety.
As far as what to feature, well the holidays/seasons certainly dictate a lot of that and especially since I just started in August. One thing that I try to keep in mind is that not all holidays/seasons are celebrated and experienced by everyone. I have been trying to feature images that would appeal to all and may be used for something other then that particular holiday or season that is being highlighted. For instance Halloween is a big holiday for some but not all. I only did two Halloween images because I knew there are other interests out there so I chose to do harvest/fall type things for variety.
Q: How did you discover/select your design team?
A: Well, I am truly in the beginning stages of all this. It really has been a "hunt" for what I believe is a nice variety of talent. I have been to what seems like hundreds of blogs, I have scanned many card galleries on the bigger sites and spent many of hours in the looking process. Some, I have met through other challenges that I have participated in as well or sites I have been on. Although come next round of DT members I will be doing a call, I am sure this will be much easier on me! Although I must say I feel truly blessed by all the talented people that have joined me in the venture and have given me nothing but support.
I personally think a design team should be diversified so you have a wide range of design elements present. I think if all your DT is over the top with a lot of stuff on their cards you will turn away the more simple and clean card maker. So I truly like a mix of designers. I do think I have had just that. I certainly want my DT to inspire and I think the team members that I have had offer a wide range of talent, design and inspiration. I truly believe diversity is important and a key factor as well when reaching out to a wide range of people. It is a lot like the images itself, one style will appeal to one person more then another, so if you don't offer different styles in your images and designs you are in some ways limiting what you have to offer. I personally think I have a lot to offer in a wide variety of images so I want my DT to reflect that same variety.
Q: Do you have any suggestions for other artists and crafters wanting to share their work?
A: As far as artists and crafters my suggestions to you is that old saying "do what you love and love what you do". There really is something in this statement that speaks to our hearts. I have always felt that card making and scrapbooking is a form of art. I say don't compare your creations, just enjoy what you have created. When I think of art I think you should just do what feels best for you. We all have our own style and I don't think there is a wrong or right style when it comes to art. That is why it is called art. Afterall, if we all created alike it would be one big boring world. I believe art is a reflection of your soul and who is one to judge another person's soul. If you want to share your art or your crafts I say find a way to do it that is a good outlet for you and don't be discouraged if at first you don't succeed. I think there is a lot of trial and error to everything and the only difference between someone that succeeds and someone that fails is that the one that succeeded just got back up and went on down the road. So I always get back up and go forth even if it is down a new path! :O)
Q: Share anything you'd care for readers to know….
A: Something I would like for the readers to know is that I really do design out of my heart and soul and I truly put a lot of thought into each and every image I create. It also exhilarates me to see all my black and white images coming to life in other people's talents. I don't care who's card I see with my design on it, I always get such true delight to see my images through another crafters eye, style and soul.
