This is a two part interview with Nina May, owner and creator of There's Magic In the Air blog site. The interview was conducted electronically; questions were emailed to Nina and she wrote out her responses. Nina started her blog to explore digital design while working on her own photopolymer stamp line.
Q: Describe the inspiration for There's Magic In the Air(TMITA).
A: The inspiration for TMITA came from being a cardmaker, scrapbooker and artist myself. The artist in me kept looking at all these stamped images and kept thinking "heck, I could be drawing these myself" and the more I stamped the more I thought it. So, about a little over a year ago I "thought" I would jump into making photopolymer stamps, then life "got in the way". When I finally got back to my venture, digital stamps were starting to hit the market and so I thought that avenue sounded like a much safer way to start out. So, I decided to test the waters by giving away free digital stamps for a limited time. That is when TMITA came to life.
Q: Where did the name (and inspiration) come from?
A: I had a hard time with the name, because I already had came up with this really cute name that I had planned to name my photopolymer stamps and didn't want to change it and still don't. Since I am in the process of trademarking that name I was worried to "put it out there", so I came up with TMITA, which might not have been a great idea when looking at the big picture now! I was reading a book and part of one of the sentences I was reading was "there's magic in the air" and as soon as I read it I knew that was what I wanted the name of my blog to be. Mainly, because I felt that when friends get together to craft there is this magic of friendship, dialog and craftiness all blending together in the atmosphere, thus the magic in the air.
Q: Where do you hope this blog will go from here?
A: I mainly started this blog to test the waters for some of my designs and to make sure people would be interested in what I had to offer as a stamp designer/artist. I hope this blog will bring me some recognition and respect among the stamping community with hope of selling my stamps not only in digital stamps but as well in photopolymer in the near future. Right now I am in the process of having a website built to showcase my images. At this writing I have just over 60 images to open my store with. All my own original designs. So I guess my big hope would be to have a successful stamp business in the near future, but still maintaining my blog where freebies and challenges would still be featured. Afterall, we all love a good freebie!
