According to a CBS news report, President Barack Obama will send 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, which would match the number of troops General Stanley McChrystal wanted.
In response to the CBS story the White House issued a statement negating its contents.
“Reports that President Obama has made a decision about Afghanistan are absolutely false. He has not received final options for his consideration, he has not reviewed those options with his national security team, and he has not made any decisions about resources. Any reports to the contrary are completely untrue and come from uninformed sources.'"
If we are to believe the CBS story, which I am inclined to, it seems as if the President went with what his top military advisers wanted: More troops in Afghanistan.
This is what 40,000 will do for the War in Afghanistan. By the end of 2010, the United States will have at least 100,000 there and they would remain there for the foreseeable future.
I’m sure this news will not sit well with some Democrats who have constantly urged the President to pull out of both Iraq and Afghanistan. Gen. McChrystal wants the troops in Afghanistan for at least four years in an attempt to double the current size of troops stationed there.
Moving toward the 2010 mid-term elections, I’m not sure how this will bode for a President whose poll numbers have performed like a roller coaster at Islands of Adventure in Orlando.
There is also good and bad news about healthcare since its passage in the house. Some dems are upset over the bill because of its lack of, how shall I say, strength on many reform issues.
The country is also still dealing with the tragedy in Fort Hood as a disgruntled soldier opened fire upon his own men and women because of his un-willingness for re-deployment to Iraq.
So I’m sure that more war news is just what President Obama wanted to send the country’s way after a tough week.
I’m still with the President and I believe that his decision is what’s best for the country. I just hope his advisers feel the same way.
