I want you! To be part of my Socialist agenda.

President - that's President of the United States - Barack Obama is planning on speaking to children in elementary schools on Sept 8. According to the White House, the conversation will be about the importance of staying in school and getting an education.

President Obama has stressed that education is one of the most important parts of his platform as President and that he wants to encourage children to do better in school. However, since news about the planned speech to kids broke, there has been an obscene amount of outrage about the proposed address.

Now, it's a given that we all have a political opinion in this country and not all of us agree with the President on matters of policy and politics. That said, isn't it a good thing that the President of these United States of America wants to take some time out and speak to the children of this great nation on a personal level and encourage them. Whether you agree with his philosophy or not, the man has accomplished a great deal in his life, not the least of which is becoming the President of the US.

According to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, “This is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation’s school children about persisting and succeeding in school.”  According to White House event-related guides developed by the U.S. Department of Education’s Teaching Fellows, grade-school students will be told to “listen to the speech” and “could think about the following:”

*What is the President trying to tell me?

*What is the President asking me to do?

*What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

After the speech, teachers will ask students:

*What do you think the President wants us to do?

*Does the speech make you want to do anything?

*Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?

I highly doubt that Obama is stupid enough to make this conversation about health care or any other form of partisan politics. He is, after all, talking to pre-adolescents here. That said, if Obama has said that this will be a conversation about education and working hard in your life, what is the problem?

I've been reading comments about the story from everyday people who are threatening to keep their children out of school on the day of the speech and I just can't understand why anyone would want to deprive their children of a chance to have the President - that's President of the United States - speak directly to them. My father thought Ronald Reagan was the devil himself, but had he been addressing children about the importance of education, there is no way my dad would have even considered letting me miss school that day.

Yes, Obama obviously has an agenda, but do you seriously believe that he would resort to trying to indoctrinate kids to further it? Even if he were that stupid, there's no way he would get away with it. It would all but destroy any credibility he has.

No doubt, we're in a very polarizingly political period in American history right now, but does everything have to be political?

Perhaps - without using ALL CAPS or resorting to insults - someone could explain to me, why our children should not be allowed to hear what the President of the United States has to say.

Oh and for all of you asking why Obama isn't talking to older kids, here is the lesson plan for grades 7-12.
