Leakey Prize Event: U.S. Primatology Film Screening
California Academy of Sciences, Planetarium in Golden Gate Park

An inspiring evening of cinematic discovery and discourse on the past, present and endangered future of our closest living relatives, the great apes. The Leakey Foundation will host the U.S. screening of two award-winning primatology films, selected at the 2008 International Primatological Society Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland. The films, entitled "Bonobos: Missing in Action", (2006, UK) and "Mystery of Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey", (2002, China), were chosen for their original, scientifically accurate and compelling presentations of the stories of two different endangered primates. The films also follow the stories of the humans devoted to understanding and advocating for these primates and the vast, ever expanding body of knowledge they impart on us; giving us insight into what it means to be a primate and what it means to be a human.

Admission: $15 for general public/ $10 for members*

Guests may purchase tickets online at www.cityboxoffice.com or charge by phone at 415.392.4400. Tickets are available for pick-up at City Box Office, 180 Redwood St., San Francisco.

Friday, October 31st, 7:00 pm
Leakey Prize Laureate Lecture: An Evening with Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Toshisada Nishida
Herbst Theatre, Downtown San Francisco

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE and Dr. Toshisada Nishida will discuss the highlights of their pioneering careers. With the encouragement and mentoring of Dr. Louis Leakey, Dr. GoodallÕs work began in 1960 and became the foundation for future primatological research. Dr. Nishida's research began in 1965 and established him as an authority on chimpanzee culture. Through their diligent work, these scientists have shaped the field of primatology and uncovered pivotal findings that help us better understand one of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzee.

Leakey Prize Event: Public Forum for Primatology and Scientific Roundtable
California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park

We will host 20 of the greatest minds in the international scientific community as they explore the question "What does it mean to be a primate?" We will examine what we have learned from primatology over the past 40 years and what insights it has given us to the question "What does it mean to be human?" We will also take a look into the next 40 years of primatology; to investigate what more we can learn about primates and how that will continue impact our understanding the human story.

Moderated by Ira Flatow, host of NPR's Talk of the Nation: Science Friday.
Admission: $200 for all attendees
