In the past decade, the Lower East Side has become a Disneyland for drunks and a playground for out of control development. History is fast being lost. That fact was not lost on the Lower East Side Conservancy who worked to get the area landmark status. In 2008, The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed New York's Lower East Side as one of America's eleven most endangered places.
This summer on July 24th at the Asian American International Film Festival, a documentary short called Lower East Side: An Endangered Place will be shown as a part of the Home is Where the Heart is program. The Festival features independent films by Asian film makers.
The documentary by director MA Shumin and looks at the gentrification of the area and how that has affected the lives of people who live and work there. It features interviews with those who have varying opinions on what is happening to this historic district.
What follows are two video segments. The first is the trailer for Lower East Side: An Endangered Place and a History segment by the Trust highlighting the 2008 11 most endangered places, including the Lower East Side.
