The original "Red Dawn" was a seriously depressing film. It was scary because the world was a scary place in the 80s when the film was released. ( I think it is scarier today, but that's another story for another movie.) There was a cold war going on. An attack on America could of happened.
Of course an attack did happen on 9-11-2001. That attack makes movies such as "Red Dawn" a bit more ominous.
Original Film
The film had a stellar cast including, Patrick Swazye, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, Darren Dalton, Jennifer Grey, Brad Savage, Ben Johnson, Harry Dean Stanton, Ron O'Neal. There are many others actors, but these are the main characters.
Synopsis Original Film
From IMDb.It is the mid-1980s. From out of the sky, Soviet & Cuban troops begin landing on the football field of a Colorado high school. In seconds, the paratroops have attacked the school & sent a group of teenagers fleeing into the mountains. Armed only with hunting rifles, pistols & bows and arrows, the teens struggles to survive the bitter winter & Soviet KGB patrols hunting for them. Eventually trouble arises when they kill a group of Soviet soldiers on patrol in the highlands. Soon, they will wage their own guerrilla warfare against the invading Soviet troops....under the banner of 'Wolverines'!
Reviews
This was very much a middle of the road type movie. You loved or you hated it. I didn't care for it because it hit close to home with the world situation and I really don't like depressing movies.
The Remake
Don Bradley is set to direct. He has been involved in one way or another with many good films including; Quantum of Solace, second unit director, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull, second unit director. And , going back a bit, "Independence Day", Stunt coordinator. He knows what he is doing.
Cast
So far there are just a few cast members who have been announced. Josh Peck, who has done lots of TV and has been the voice of "Eddie" in "Ice Age, Melt Down" and "Ice Age, Dawn of the Dinosaurs." Adrianne Palicki who has also done a lot of TV and a few Indie shorts, and a few Indie features. Chris Hemsworth just joined the cast. He is one his way to a career any actor would be proud of. Chris has the starring role in "Thor", which is still in pre-production, scheduled for a 2011 release. He has two other films. Horror genre "The Cabin in the Woods", which is in post production with a release date of 2-5-2010 and also "A Perfect Getaway" which is completed and has a release date of 8-14-09. The last film also stars "Milla Jovovich", so if anyone actually looks at the rest of the film will be the questions. Milla is stunning and a great actress, not to mention a hero of the horror genre.
The Synopsis
Plot of movies that are new on their journey to the box office are usually very hush, hush. But we can look at a few things we do know for sure. (Nothing is for sure, but .....likely.)
Location story is taking place in. The original film was located in Colorado. The location for the remake hasn't been named as far as I know, but the high school is called "Spokane High School". This could mean a change of states to Washington, but I honestly am making an educated guess.
Antagonists. The original film guys were Russian and South American, (I have also heard Cuban.) The new synopsis is that they are Chinese and Russian. So, we are still scared of the Russians, it was ridiculous to be afraid of South Americans and everyone is afraid of China. Alrighty then.
Misc. Information.
The original "Red Dawn" was considered one of the most violent films by the Guinness Book of Records. It was the first film released with a PG-13 rating by "The Motion Picture Association of America".
Red Dawn is hoping for a September 24th, 2010 release.
