Susana Balbo's Torrontes
Susana Balbo is one of the best-known winemakers in Argentina – not because she is female, more likely in spite of the fact.
She’s been making wine since 1981, and was the first Argentine winemaker hired as a consultant to make wine outside of the country. She’s made wine in France, Spain, Chile, South Africa, Italy, Australia and America. She also makes a point of spending a month every year in a different wine region studying methodology.
Her winery, Dominio del Plata, is nestled in the foothills of the Andes mountains in Mendoza. It is a family business run by Susana and her husband, who were originally known for their mostly high-end Malbecs.
About six years ago they created a second label, Crios (Spanish for offspring), a line of six well-priced and excellent wines.
Torrontés is the main white grape grown in Argentina. It produces a highly aromatic wine that is fruity, floral and slightly spicy; very different from your garden variety Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. If you like Viognier or Gewurtztraminer, you definitely want to try this one.
The Crios Torrontés 2008 has the body and complexity of a sweet wine but is decidedly dry. It is quite aromatic with hints of peach, pear, flowers and citrus fruit. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with fruit flavors that keep you coming back for another sip, and plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors.
