For the 8th straight year, Bob Dylan's iron range hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota will celebrate the singer/songwriter's birthday with "Dylan Days," May 21-24, 2009. Dylan was born on May 24th, 1941 in Duluth, but his family soon moved to Hibbing, where his father owned the appliance store, and Bob grew up, graduating from Hibbing High School in 1959.
According to its local founders and organizers, Dylan Days began as an informal gathering at Zimmy's Bar in Hibbing to celebrate the legend' s 50th birthday with some impromptu musical performances.
The event has grown each year, and now includes several appropriately artistic events, including a singer/songwriter contest, a pre-judged literary contest, visual arts competition, a Bobby Zimmerman bus tour, and of course, plenty of music. Dylan Days seeks to enhance the arts community in northern Minnesota.
The highlight of this year's festivities is a performance by Scarlett Rivera and Gene LaFond. Rivera's haunting violin can be heard in Dylan's well-known song "Hurricane." Rivera played on the "Desire" album, and both musicians traveled with Dylan's 1975-76 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. They will be headlining the show Saturday, May 23rd at the "historic Hibbing High School Auditorium" where a young Bob Zimmerman played as a teen, pre-superstardom. LaFond's band, The Wild Unknown, will accompany. After the show, there will even be a birthday cake for Bob. And while Mr. Dylan has never yet made an appearance at Dylan Days, you never know...
