Brit transplant Jamie Milnes made a name for himself as a celebrity trainer. Now Milnes has one goal for us Yankees: to bring fitness to the disenfranchised. His “Get Fit Go Play” program, in collaboration with the non-profit group “Mentor LA,” is determined to show people how to improve their lives through fitness.
WHAT MADE YOU DEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO FITNESS?
I guess being "fit" has enabled me to have so many incredible experiences over the years and I'm learning that those experiences can continue, almost indefinitely so long as I keep in shape. For some fitness is just going to the gym but for me it is a means to an end. It allows me to play. Whether the end is mountain biking, paddle boarding, mountaineering, snowboarding, or soccer, it's all the same.
HOW DOES BALANCED TRAINING DIFFER FROM OTHER FORMS OF EXERCISE?
For me balanced means neither excessive nor single minded. I find that some of us can become religious about a style or type of exercise. Some become devout followers of or running addicts for example without space to embrace other forms of movement or exercise. I advocate being as eclectic as possible. It's great to be good at something and to have preferences but not at the expense of shutting yourself off to a potential new learning experience. It's also important to get the write dosage of exercise for your needs and lifestyle. Even exercise in pursuit of health in excess can be harmful.
SHOULD SOMEONE SHELL OUT HARD-EARNED CASH ON A PERSONAL TRAINER?
Depends on the trainer I guess. I have some clients who workout with me every couple of weeks. I give them homework and then they are accountable to me and use me as a resource and for support. I'd also advise using a trainer for a specific time frame or to train for a specific purpose such as a sport or an event. Don't just go in there open ended much in the same way you wouldn't hire a contractor per say.
DO YOU HAVE MANY OLDER CLIENTS?
I have ages right across the board from young to older. I have a couple of clients in their mid seventies and some in their sixties. I don't tend to treat my older clients much differently though, even though their needs are usually geared more towards the health related fitness end of the spectrum. Similar stuff just toned down a few notches. They are up for it just as much usually.
WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO HOLD ONTO YOUTH?
I'm not sure if I would qualify as having that kind of wisdom yet at 42. However, it would seem as though having a passion and being continuously inquisitive and adventurous are key. Boredom and lack of passion sap your energy like nobody's business. Try something new and practice what you love.
IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES, WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH STRESS?
If you're losing your home and have no job then I don't want to patronize you with any cliché advice. If your stressing over the what ifs and maybes though then focus on what you have. Health is clearly one of the cornerstones of happiness, and as for exercise and health the two go hand in hand. Go and play some more. Hike, bike, walk on the beach , etc. it's all free too. No gym necessary.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS?
Alive I hope. And wishing I had wasted less time stressing about things that never happened.
