It’s been expounded upon numerous times about the genius of Alan Moore in the creation and success of the Watchmen mini-series. Subsequently, his artistic partner, Dave Gibbons, seems get overlooked somewhat in the discussions of the contributions and overall effect of the book. While adhering to Moore’s insanely detailed scripts (the script for issue # 1 was over 100 pages alone!), Gibbons also was given artistic freedom in the character designs and look of the New York they resided in, even adding in background elements that ultimately enhanced the quality of Watchmen. And while Moore wanted nothing to do with the film adaptation, Gibbons served as a creative consultant to Zack Snyder, as well as publishing Watching the Watchmen, a coffee table book with the artist’s take on the development of his participation in the seminal work. The book also shares rare pieces of art such as early sketches and character designs.
Watchmen made Dave Gibbons a legend amongst not only his peers but the entire comic book community as well. And while he began his career in the British comic industry illustrating such titles as 2000 AD and Dan Dare, he soon began work at DC Comics. Not only is he a talented penciler and inker, Gibbons is also known for his scripting abilities. Here are a few more books and series from Dave Gibbons that are worth looking into.
