Starting this week near Madison Square Garden in New York, a 70-foot-high, red digital display sign will indicate projected tons of greenhouse gases that we’re putting into the atmosphere. This giant counter is both green guilt baiting and an advertising stunt by a European climate consultants business venture that expects Obama’s cap-and-trade climate regulations to make them very rich.
The massive wave of green products, services and their advertising, and environmental regulations will create new green markets for corporate exploitation. The hot issues of climate change are a free-for-all of eco-groups, lobbyists and political posturing, all agitating for solutions that will spur massive new markets with government spending and corporate venture capital.
An MIT scientist says he uses economic models to grossly estimate the count of greenhouse gas emissions – no empirical data or ambient air quality measurements are available for real greenhouse gas impacts. The counter attempts to estimate greenhouse gases; including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, and reports them in carbon dioxide equivalents. However, it ignores the effects of natural cycles, such as the El Niño, and doesn’t factor in aerosols, which are difficult to measure and also exert a cooling effect.

The counter is powered from the city’s electric power grid. But, representatives did not have information on the signs total power consumption or its carbon footprint.
