Atlantic City, NJ- Hoping to play David to #2 Michigan State’s Goliath, Derek Kellogg’s UMass Minutemen (2-4) started a lineup that featured two starters getting their first starts of the season and a third getting his first career start at his position. In the end the Michigan State Spartans (5-1) were just too athletic for the Minutemen to keep up with, and the Spartans went on to win 106-68.

Anthony Gurley lead all scorers with 24 points and Ricky Harris added 15 points for the Minutemen while Michigan state had five players score in double digits including Chris Allen (18), Raymar Morgan (17), Kalin Lucas (16), Korie Lucious (13) and Delvon Roe (11). Sean Carter had eight rebounds to lead all board cleaners, Hashim Bailey had seven more for UMass while Draymond Green also had seven to lead Michigan State.

Early on it looked as if the line up changes would work as the players in question all contributed. Ricky Harris appeared to have a handle on the point guard position while scoring four points, Anthony Gurley scored four points and Hashim Bailey added a rebound as the Minutemen got out to an early 8-2 lead two and half minutes into the game. The Spartans however would answer with a 16-0 run over the next three and half minutes to take a 10 point lead. The Minutemen would respond by hitting three foul shots before the Spartans went on a 14-0 run to get the lead to 21 points. The Minutemen would get the Michigan State lead down to 11 points twice, the second time on an Gurley basket in the paint with 1:44 to play in the first half.

In the second half the Spartans somehow found a new gear and pulled away from the team from Amherst building the lead up to 39 points on a Lucas Kalin layup with seven and a half minutes to play. Two jumpers by Terrell Vinson would cut the lead to 35 before the Spartans once again pulled away, to get the lead to 46 on an Isaiah Dahlman 3-pointer that made the score 106-60. Three pointers by Gary Correia and Freddie Riley combined with a Javorn Farrell layup for UMass closed out the scoring in this game.
