Price Wars: Acne Concealer – Maybelline vs Clinique
POSTED May 15, 10:44 AM
Looking to buy something that will conceal and heal your blemishes? A concealer containing 2% Salicylic acid would fit your needs, but price is not the only determining factor for a "Beauty on a Budget."  A cheap product that does not perform well is NEVER a good deal. So which one is the best buy?

Price Wars:

Clinique Acne Solutions Concealing StickTreatment   vs. Maybelline Pure Concealer Blemish Stick

Pros: Easy Application, no brush needed, contains Salicylic Acid for acne
Cons: Higher Price, lack of shade selection: Only three to choose from.

Maybelline $5.99
Pros: Easy Application, no brush needed, contains Salicylic Acid for acne, Low price, clever packaging prevents concealer from smashing against the top lid.
Cons: lack of shade selection: Only three to choose from.
....
Winner: Maybelline Pure Concealer Blemish Treatment $5.99
I tried both products personally and they perform very similar. Pure Concealer was a lot cheaper and had a better packaging.

Whiten Teeth Instantly with Red Lipstick!
POSTED May 13, 11:30 AM
Going out with the girls tonight or got a hot date? You want to show off a white smile, but you don’t have two weeks to work on applying Crest White Strips. Don’t fret - A Beauty on a Budget always has a great beauty solution!

If you want to show off your pearly whites or you need an instant teeth whitening effect, wear RED lipstick. That’s right. Apply it on your lips and your teeth will look instantly whiter! And everyone knows that red lips are SEXY, SEXY, SEXY!

Every woman should own at least one red lipstick shade. Red lipstick can look great on everyone.  It is all about choosing the right shade for your skin tone. Experiment at the department store to get an idea on which shades you like and then purchase similar shades at the drugstore.

Here how to rock red lipstick:

  1. When wearing a bold shade like red, you’re putting a lot of attention to your lips. A general rule would then be to wear your eye makeup more subtle. Wearing bright lipstick AND bright eye makeup could make you look like a clown. (Although there are exceptions to every rule.)
  2.  To avoid color bleeding apply a lip pencil in either your skin shade or a color to complement your lipstick. You can greatly manipulate how a lipstick shade will look depending on the color of lip pencil you use.
  3. Apply your lipstick, then blot with tissue, then apply again. This will increase the “staying power” of your lipstick.
  4. WARNING – Nothing is worse then having red lipstick on your teeth! Avoid this by following these easy steps:
    1. Apply your lipstick
    2. Insert your index finger in your month
    3. Wrap your lips around it and then gently pull out.

Home Remedy of the Week: Strawberry Facials
POSTED May 12, 3:10 PM
Besides being delicious, strawberries can be used as a gentle exfoliate due to their natural fruit acids.

Since organic beauty products are typically associated with higher prices, this is a good tip for any “Beauty on a Budget” opting for more organic options. Below are some delicious recipes for your skin:
  • Organic Facial Scrub: Mix strawberry pulp, ground organic brown rice and whole-fat cream. Rub it on clean skin in an upward circular motion, avoiding the eye area. Rinse clean with lukewarm water
  • Strawberries and Cream Mask: Mix strawberry puree, organic honey and fresh heavy cream. Apply to clean skin for about 10 minutes, avoiding the eye area. Rinse clean
  •  Strawberry Foot Scrub: Mix Strawberry, Olive Oil and Kosher Salt. Gently massage onto clean feet and rinse clean.
TIP: Because homemade beauty products are made without preservatives, they have short shelf lives. Put any unused portion in the refrigerator for no more than a couple of days.

Four Easy Ways to Lighten Yellowed Nails
POSTED May 9, 12:12 PM
Using sheer or clear nail polish can create a beautiful natural look for your manicure.  But if you find that your nails have yellowed a bit (especially form wearing darker polish) it can ruin the beauty of your natural nails.  Here are a few inexpensive tips to lighten them:

  • Soak your nails in lemon juice or rub a slice over each nail and let them dry.
  • Give your nails a break from polish between manicures.  I suggest at least for a couple of days.  This will allow some sunlight to hit your nails and possibly prevent them from yellowing as much.
  • Scrubbing whitening toothpaste on polish-free nails may help as well (although it may take several more days to see the effect.)
  • Always make sure to apply a base coat.  I suggest Sally Henson  Double Duty Strengthening Base & Top Coat.  It helps to moisturize and prevent color from staining your nails.  It also procudes a shiny top coat to finish off your manicure.

22 Household uses for Shampoo!
POSTED May 8, 2:21 PM
Shampoo works as an effective degreaser – thus great for multiple household uses. Below is a list I compiled from both personal experience and tips from the internet. This is especially ideal for using that brand of shampoo you bought, but really didn’t like, or for doubling up on inexpensive brands like Suave ($1.50):
...
  1. Fill your liquid soap dispensers with shampoo. It's less expensive than liquid soap. It's also a great degreaser for your hands.
  2. Mix Shampoo with baking soda to clean chrome and use conditioner to make it shine.
  3. Dilute with a little water to use it as bubble solution for the kids.
  4. Use shampoo mixed with conditioner instead of shaving cream.
  5. Mix with water to clean nylon panty hose and other hand wash delicates
  6. Use shampoo (especially the fruity smelling stuff) as a substitute for bubble bath or shower gel.
  7. Use it to wash hard grime or bird poop off your car or truck.
  8. Remove your makup with shampoo and a soft cloth. Rinse your face with tap water afterwards.
  9. Use it as a spot cleaner. It will remove stains like the ring around the collar of your shirt or the exterior of your down jacket.
  10. Use shampoo to clean your brushes and combs. Remove all the hair and let it soak in the soapy mixture before rinsing.
  11. Fill a small bowl of water and a little shampoo to soak your fingernails. It cleans and conditions your cuticles
  12. Use baby shampoo to wash your dog or cat.
  13. Use it to wash your paint/arts and crafts brushes.
  14. Mix it with water to clean your hardwood floors
  15. Use baby shampoo and tap water to clean dirt in your eyes as well as your eyelashes. It helps to relieve dry eye irritation.
  16. Use shampoo to wash your sweaters.
  17. It works as great spot cleaner for your sofa or couch.
  18. Rub a couple drops of shampoo on the inside of your diving mask. Then, rinse clean with water. Your mask won't fog up when you're diving under the water!
  19. Grab the shampoo and a clean rag to spot clean the outside of your refrigerator and stove. It will remove greasy spots and food spills.
  20. Mix shampoo and baking soda to remove excess hairspray residue.
  21. Use it remove a stubborn ring off your finger
  22. It works well for cleaning the cork handles on old fishing poles.
