The Obama administration insists they have no anti-gun agenda, yet we find another example of just that.  In the fiscal 2009 omnibus spending bill, Democratic lawmakers inserted wording that takes away the guns from investigators with the Library's Office of the Inspector General. The bill was signed into law last March.  Tucked into page 308 of the final version of the bill, HR 1105, is this nugget:

"SEC. 210. LIMITATION ON CERTAIN INSPECTORS GENERAL AUTHORITY TO USE FIREARMS. None of the funds made available in this Act may be used by the Inspector General of the Architect of the Capitol or the Inspector General of the Library of Congress to purchase, maintain, or carry any firearm." (emphasis mine)

The excuse was that it was an issue of "separation of powers" between the legislative and executive branches, since the library is under the congress and the investigators are under the Marshall's office which is under the executive branch.  For 15 years the investigators have been allowed to carry guns and haven't killed or even wounded anybody in that time. Nobody worried about separation of powers issues for all that time either.

Never mind that security at the Senate and House of Representatives carry guns. (They have to protect the congressmen, you know!) Never mind that investigators all through the government are armed.  It would seem some nervous librarians got together and prevailed upon their representatives to keep the investigators for the Library of Congress from buying or carrying arms as they execute search warrants, serve subpoenas, and investigate crimes.  With 465 pages in the spending bill, it will be interesting to see what else slips out over the next year.....
