Oakland A's officials asked the City of Fremont today to stop work on the planning process of its proposed 32,000-seat stadium in Fremont.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the team said it wants to re-assess their plans and consider other options.
The ongoing environmental review of the Pacific Commons site will be stopped, and plans just two weeks ago to move ahead with a review of a second site, in the Warm Springs neighborhood adjacent to a planned BART stop will not proceed as originally requested, according to city officials.
That’s bad news for Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman, who won re-election touting his support for the A’s to move to Fremont.
“I think this means the A’s aren’t going to build here, at least not at that site,” he told the Chronicle. “I think it’s terrible. Fremont’s lost the best opportunity we’ve ever had.”
Warm Springs residents have protested the plan since forming a grassroots organization in December. A’s owner Lew Wolff said earlier this week he was canceling meetings scheduled for Feb. 24 because of the protests.
