The numbers tell a sobering story for Ford Motor Co., and it's just the latest - but likely not the last - dismal chapter for America's auto industry.

The company said it lost $129 million in the third quarter, burned through $7.7 billion in cash, and will cut about another 2,260 workers from the payroll.

On the upside - if it can be called that - things weren't as bad the past three months as they were earlier this year, at least for part of the ledger. Ford lost nearly $8.7 billion in the second quarter, though the third-quarter cash burn was much greater than the $2.1 billion in the second quarter.
