Chicago, gun control, and racism
Chicago high school honor student Derrion Albert was beaten to death Monday night. No guns were involved, but it appears that Mayor Richard Daley has a problem similar to that of New York’s Mayor Bloomberg.
Examination of FBI Supplemental Homicide data indicates that between 2000 and 2007, Blacks consistently comprised about 75% of all homicides in Chicago (see chart below).
According to the Census Bureau, Blacks comprised 36.8% of Chicago’s population in
2000.
Now for the rest of the story
Between 2000 and 2006, Chicago, home of the handgun ban, saw handguns comprise a 43.2% larger portion of all homicides, increasing from 55.5% to 79.5% of all homicide methods. Firearm usage increased 24.7%, from 65.6% to 81.8% of all homicide methods.
Meanwhile, for the rest of Illinois, firearm usage decreased 16.0%, from 72.3% to 60.7%. (Handgun data not available.)
In 2006, Chicago had an overall murder rate of 16.55 (per 100,000 population). The rest of the state’s rate was 3.93. Chicago’s firearms homicide rate was 13.54 and the non-firearms homicide rate was 3.01. The rest of Illinois’s rates were 3.93 and 1.54, respectively.*
Of course, some of this variance is due to the fact that urban areas generally have higher violent crime rates. However, while Chicago’s overall homicide rate dropped 25.2% between 2000 and 2006, its firearm homicide rate dropped only 6.7%. Moreover, the use of handguns in homicides increased 6.8%, from 352 in 2000 to 376 in 2006.
Looks like another failure for gun control, with the consequences again inordinately borne by Blacks.
