Customs agents in California inspecting a shipping container bound for the Netherlands found a 1965 van that was stolen from a repair shop in 1974.
The van was being shipped overseas by an Arizona restorer. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents ran the VIN number got a hit off of the National Insurance Crime Bureau database.
According to authorities, the restorer, who was not identified, is not a suspect. Mike Maleta, an investigator with the California Highway Patrol, said the man was a victim himself, noting that he was an innocent purchaser of the van.
"I'm going to try my best to find the crook,” said Maleta, who is going to attempt to track the vehicles ownership through interviews and registration documents.
The van, which was probably worth only a few hundred dollars when it was originally purchased, is now worth $27,000 because of the restoration.
Allstate Insurance Company, which paid the original owner for the loss decades ago, now owns the van. The insurance company has not yet said what they are going to do with the van.
