Local songwriters Bridgette Tatum and Danny Myrick are undoubtedly celebrating the just-announced news that one of their collaborations, Jason Aldean’s latest “She’s Country” single, has hit the No. 1 spot on the nation’s country singles charts.
The rock-infused country tune’s rise to the top slot on the charts marks the first time either songwriter has scored a No. 1 song, and just last week, as the track hit the Top 5, Tatum and Myrick met artist Aldean for the first time at Nashville radio station WSIX, The Big 98.
Released as the lead single from Wide Open, Aldean’s latest and third album for the Broken Bow label, “She’s Country” also serves as Aldean's second career No. 1 and his sixth Top 10—never mind that it’s also his fastest-rising hit to date.
"Man, it's hard work to get up to that No. 1 spot, and I don't take it for granted," Aldean said. "I've got a small, but mighty team ... from the guys at the label to my crew out on the road. Thanks to them and all my friends at country radio, we'll be celebrating extra hard this week."
Aldean first debuted “She’s Country” for the public at large via his live performance of the tune during the 2008 CMA Awards, but the singer’s fans were introduced to the number earlier last fall during the Georgia native’s headlining CMT tour, with openers Lady Antebellum andEric Durrance.
The guitar-driven single (and subsequently, its authors) has been given much credit for the initial record-breaking success of Aldean’s new album, which posted first-week sales of some posted 108,960 copies. The big numbers pushed Wide Open, to the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Country Albums Chart and in the No. 4 position on the all-genre Billboard Top 200 chart. It also become the No. 1 song on iTunes all-genre ringtone chart recently.
Jason Aldean's new and third CD is a hot-seller.
“I’m an extremist. I make music that I want to hear,” says “She’s Country” co-writer Tatum. “If it’s a ballad, you’re going to hurt. If it’s a rockin’ tune, you are going to rock ‘n’ roll ‘til your pants fall off.”
Currently, Tatum’s working to release her own CD, which reported will contain six Tatum-Myrick collaborations, including the album’s likely first single, “Hillbilly Rockstar.” But today, both tunesmiths—writers for their own Root 49 Music—are relishing the No. 1 success of “She’s Country.”
“Right now is a good place to be in,” says Tatum, who will join Aldean, a former ACM Top New Male Vocalist winner, on the concert stage May 21 at the Speed Street 600 Festival in Charlotte, N.C. “I know who I am and I know who I’m going to be. I know what my responsibility is in that.”
Meanwhile, Mississippi native Myrick--who's also penned International Harvester,a former No. 10 single by country singer Craig Morgan—and South Carolina daughter Tatum will team this week to perform at at the Key West Songwriters' Festival in Florida on April 29-May 3.
But come June 12, it’s likely they’ll be among the Nashville concertgoers who take in Aldean’s just-announced performance at The Wildhorse Saloon, 120 Second Ave. North, beginning at 9 p.m. Tickets, including $100-a-pop meet 'n' greet tix, are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
