Wood in furniture is a beautiful compliment to any homes decor. Functional, and long lasting many woods are valued for their strength, beauty and overall visual appeal. Knowing what your different woods are when purchasing furniture and the common colors, variations and stains they come in can make you a wise and informed consumer. Researching woods that appeal to your sense of style and taste will make your home have the polished look and feel. Here you will find a list of the most commonly used woods for furniture and some of their individual characteristics.

White Pine- White pine is a soft wood and virtually void of pores. It is easy to work with, has very little graining and  comes in color variations from cream to reddish brown.  It is often seen where rustic, colonial and informal pieces are desired.

Cherry- Small pores, closely grained and beautiful, Cherry is usually red-brown in color,  finished in light brown stains, or fruitwood. It is seen in the finest designed pieces of furniture, but also in many styles varying from informal rustic to Queen Anne styled furniture. It is ever popular and its popularity has grown in recent years as a desirable option in kitchen cabinetry.

Oak- This strong wood is heavy, large pored, and its strength makes it a hard wood to work with for any carved details.  It ranges in color from gray brown to golden tan. Oak was wildly popular in the last decade, seen often in furniture of all designs and type.  It is still widely used for bedroom suits  and is the standard still in many homes being built today. It is generally considered the best wood for most informal peices.

Maple- Maple has interesting characteristics, although it is a strong wood, it is flexible and allows for a wide variety of uses and applications.  Small even pores and straight grained it is a very popular choice today.  It has curly and bird's eye patterns that is highly desired and sought after in furniture. It is cream to red-brown and  is used in cabinets, bureaus, colonial and modern furniture.

Mahogany- Strong and with a wide variety of patterns in the grain, Mahogany is a beautiful reddish brown wood that is often found in the finer pieces of furniture produced today.  It has long last quality and is a favorite for those preferring upscale heirloom pieces.
