NJ Public School Bans ALL Energy drinks - Maybe Banned from entire district
When Middle School Principal Joe Trybulsk saw children drinking so-called energy drinks before school, during lunchtime and after school, he sent home to parents a letter and made a schoolwide announcement, banning on all energy drinks, which he described as any drink that contains 50 milligrams or more of caffeine in a single serving, in combination with high amounts of sugar and/or "natural energy boosters" such as ephedrine, guarana and ginseng.
"Energy drinks may contain as much as 80 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of a cup of coffee, compared to the 37 milligrams of caffeine in a Mountain Dew or the 23 milligrams in a Coca-Cola Classic," Trybulski said.
Now before we go on, lets see what drinks fit into this category. ingredients per serving:
- Cup of Coffee w cream and sweetner: sucralose, glucose syrup and 120mg caffeine
- Can of DIET Mountain Dew: Aspartime, sucralose, 55mg caffeine
- A 16oz bottle of the following sodas:
Coca-Cola Blak, RC Cola,
Diet Coke, Shasta Cola ,
Nestea , VitaminWater, Sunkist Orange Soda
Faygo Cola,
Dr Pepper MR. Pibb, or
- A 12 oz can of iced or brewed tea, Mello Yello, and of course kiss your starbucks goodbye.
- 1 rounded teaspoon of instant coffee powder contains 57mg of caffeine.
- No more Coffee Flavored treats either, as a full serving of Coffee Ice cream from Haggen Dazs or Dryers has over 50mg of caffeine, as well as Coffee flavored Yogurts.
And how many drinks can you find with ephedra in them? NONE. The FDA Banned the sale of ephedra in foods. So adding Ephedra to your list of harmful chemicals is just silly. And what is Guarana doing there? Guarana is just another source of caffeine, like the coffee bean. So narrowed down, His problem seems to be a combination of Ginseng and Caffeine. SO what will not lead you down the path of a mark on your permanent record? Is kaboom OK? Sure it is in an 8oz shooter and is called Kaboom Energy, but it only has 40mg of caffeine, and is full of antioxidants, like guava puree, citric acid, guarana extract, cochineal extract (for color), green tea extract, ascorbic acid, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin B2, vitamin B12, folic acid, and it is oranic and comes from green tea. Or how about a small can of Fresca - which looks, smells and tastes like an energy drink but does not have a milligram of the evil stuff?
"We researched the health issues and what people thought of it (students drinking energy drinks)," Trybulski said Monday. "We then thought we would go forward with this just like the dress code, this was something we thought of as inappropriate in school. It wasn't healthy in school."
Trybulski said students found with this legal and
SOMETIMES HELPFUL evil beverage will have it confiscated and thrown away. The charged student might be brought to a school administrator to be admonished for drinking such an horrible substance, and coerced to stay away from caffeine. The parents might be called in if the child warrants it, and to students who refuse to give up their 20oz vitamin water Trybulski said they could be subject to insubordination.
This complete silliness might be contained to just this one public middle school. Superintendent of Schools Ed Forsthoffer, III said Monday that some Board of Education members said banning the drinks throughout the district's schools should be a "parent issue," and not something decided by school administrators.
