Registration recently closed for the ICC’s International Commercial Mediation Competition, scheduled to be held in Paris on February 6-10, 2010—training and breeding a new batch of soon-to-be lawyer-mediators. The competition is enormously important in legitimizing the value of mediation for future commercial attorneys, as law students from across the world meet to learn how to conduct business through collaborative problem-solving and constructive negotiation sessions.
The competition involves mock mediation sessions and participants are graded based on both their written and oral advocacy skills. The judges are compromised of over 85 legal experts from across the globe and the entire event is sponsored by major international law firms and companies involved in international dispute resolution.
The event is symbolically important as law firms and universities demonstrate the that mediation has a place in the international business world, but is also significant in proving to future lawyers how beneficial the mediation process can be for parties.
This is just another reminder to invest in teaching young lawyers and business people the values of engaging in alternative dispute resolution. We can change the face of global business if our lawyers and businessmen and women are ready and motivated to participate in the mediation process.
