The woman staring down from this Scotish castle window, well, isn't supposed to be there.
Tourist Christopher Aitchison snapped this image at Tantallon Castle, east of Edinburgh, in May 2008. The woman's clothing, some say, appears to be Middle Ages garb.
Author Richard Wiseman, professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, studies the paranormal and made the image public Friday. Wiseman has been collecting ghostly images from around the world. This particular image, though, has created the most discussion.
Wiseman responded Sunday from his I-Phone to a permissions request to use the photo for this Examiner page.
Wiseman's web site says he "has gained an international reputation for research into quirky areas of psychology, including deception, humour, luck and the paranormal."
His bestselling book, The Luck Factor, explores the lives and minds of lucky people. His latest book, Quirkology, explores the curious science of everyday life, including the psychology of lying, love, and laughter.

Tantallon Castle was built in the mid 14th century three miles southeast of North Berwick, in East Lothian, Scotland. The castle was constructed with a single wall blocking off land, and three additional sides naturally protected by sea cliffs. William Douglas, 1st Earl of of Douglas, had the place built - and it remained in the Douglas family until they sold it in 1699. The ruin is maintained today by Historic Scotland.
Sir Walter Scott described the castle in his 1808 epic poem Marmion.
"Hauntings: The Science of Ghosts," is a special program Wiseman has organized on April 4 at the University of Edinburgh Anatomy Lecture Theatre, before the 21st Edinburgh International Science Festival begins April 6. He promotes this photograph as "Is this the world's best ghost photograph?" Attendees are invited to find out when experts gather for a unique one-day examination of hauntings.
