Tis the season to be scary, and many are searching for the perfect costume. Major costume retailers, like Morris Costumes and Party City, are great places to look for ready-made costumes. However, if it’s originality you search for in your Halloween get-up, vintage shopping is a great way to go.

Hong Kong Vintage is a Charlotte hot-spot for vintage clothing, home goods, and furniture. Though Hong Kong is not a costume retailer, Halloween is its busiest time of year. According to a Hong Kong representative, this year’s most sought out looks were 80’s inspired pieces. Other costume ideas achieved through Hong Kong merchandise include Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Lucille Ball, Rachel Zoe, and 60’s/70’s hippie looks.

In these most frugal times, cost is a major factor in purchasing a Halloween costume. The key to using vintage apparel, to create your own look, is to add ‘statement’ vintage pieces to items in your own closet. This way, you are able to create originality and while saving a few bucks.

Example: To create a Country Cowgirl look.
1.) Your own old, cut-up jeans
2.) Your own plaid, button-up shirt (or t-shirt)
3.) Add vintage cowboy boots
4.) Add a vintage western hat
5.) Add a vintage leather belt
6.) Add lots of volume to your hair!
Now you have a one-of-a-kind Cowgirl look!

Check out the slide show below to see some of Hong Kong’s ‘statement pieces’ that would authenticate any DIY Halloween costume.
