The accused man appeared in court this week./7News

A 22-year-old Montana man is accused of endangerment charges after police say he left his sleeping 4-year-old daughter locked in his Jeep in below-freezing temperatures to visit a 13-year-old girl.

According to reports, police were called after the 4-year-old girl awoke and climbed out of the car and began going to homes, knocking on doors. One family let her in and called police.

Police believe the little girl had been left in the Jeep for about two hours, while the temperature outside dipped to 14 below zero.

Officers later found the little girl’s father in bed with the 13-year-old girl, but the girl claimed “nothing sexual” had occurred.

When will people realize that it is unsafe to leave a child alone in a car for any length of time – and that doing so is exponentially worse when it’s hot or cold outside?

And why is it that apparent fools like this man get to be parents while people – in my opinion clearly much more qualified than him – repeatedly fail in their desperate attempts to have children?

I understand this man is still a kid – only 22 – and if my math is right, became a father at 18, but that is no excuse.

What should the courts do with these people? Terminate their parental rights? Enact forced sterilization?

What could the courts possibly do to scare selfish, stupid choice-making people into being better parents?

I have no idea.

Reports indicate the little girl was unharmed and was released to her mother’s custody. Her father – should he be able to scrape together enough money to post $30,000 bond – has been barred from contact with her.

In my opinion she’s better off without him if he indeed did what he’s accused of.

There is absolutely no way he couldn’t have known what he was doing was wrong – both by chancing that his daughter could  freeze to death and by cavorting with a 13-year-old little girl in a bed.

Excuse me while I go and throw up.
