The Proposal with Sandra Bullock - another pushy woman in business

Every time I see a commercial for the new movie,
The Proposal with Sandra Bullock, I chuckle… and I cringe. I enjoy comedies, but, I’m a little tired of seeing stereotypical pushy female bosses.
As a woman in business, I know the difficult tight rope that we walk every day between being too nice and too pushy.
Catalyst did a fascinating study called “
The Double-Bind Dilemma for Women in Leadership: Damned if You Do, Doomed if You Don’t “. It highlights some of the difficulties that women have in the workplace getting taken seriously. If we come across too strong or too “pushy”, then we’re labeled as “witchy”. If we act too nice, then people think we don’t have what it takes to make tough decisions. It’s very difficult to get it just right. And that puts even more pressure on women at work.
The truth is that even though women have progressed in business,
The Proposal is one more reminder that we still have a long way to go.
Will I see this movie? Yes, I’m a fan of Sandra Bullock and Betty White looks hilarious in it. (And it doesn’t hurt that Ryan Reynolds is in it either.) I hope
The Proposal does well - we can certainly all use some laughs right now. I also hope that movie goers realize that the stereotypes that persist about pushy women in business (like the character Sandrea Bullock plays) don’t help anyone.
We need to work together to get rid of these old-fashioned ideas that can hold women back in business so all men and women can be more successful at work. And that’s my proposal.
