A child actor from the Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" is homeless after authorities tore down his family's shanty home in Mumbai. BBC News reports that that police hit Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail with a bamboo stick and ordered him to leave his family's home so they could demolish the shanty.
Authorities said Azharuddin's family was squatting on government-owned land that is going to be made into a public garden. But the child's mother, Shamim Ismail, told BBC News they had nowhere else to go when housing that had been promised to them by the local government and "Slumdog" filmmakers never materialized.
"Our house has been broken down by officials. We have not been given any alternate accommodation. Earlier the authorities had said they would give us a house. But I don't think that will happen any more."
Director Danny Boyle has repeatedly denied exploiting the child actors in the film, which has grossed more than $200 million so far. "Slumdog" filmmakers said they set up a trust fund, called Jai Ho after the hit song from the film, to ensure the children get proper homes, a decent education and some money when they finish high school. They said they also donated $747,500 to a charity to help slum kids in Mumbai.
So why is a child who played one of the film's important roles, young Salim, homeless today? Where are those "proper" homes? What is going on with that Mumbai charity?
