Kudzu :The vine that ate the south

Kudzu  is an amazing plant. If you have ever been to Mississippi  then you have seen this green vine growing everywhere here.Kudzu grows over everything in it' s path including trees. It is the plant that ate the south. The state of Mississippi has classified Kudzu as an invasive plant species.

It was very interesting  to discover that Kudzu has a long tradition for use among herbalists and health practitioners in Asia. The medicinal properties of Kudzu have  also been studied in America for treating Alcoholism. Kudzu is being studied for it's antimicrobial and anti inflammatory agents in one of it's isoflavones.Kudzu isoflavones has known anti-cancer and anti-leukemic agents . It also appears to be useful for  those that suffer from migraine and cluster headaches  .

Gé gen is the name traditional Chinese medicine practitioners use for Kuzu and kudzu is on their list of the top 50 fundemental herbs.

It is being studied in the United States for Ethanol production possibilities. Kudzu would be an excellent source of  biofuel. It clearly grows quickly and has no known pest or disease conditions . The southern states of America have the perfect climate for it to grow. Kudzu is  an ingrediant in some southern made soaps. In some places in the world it is a food source as well. Who knew that the vine that ate the South would turn out to be be such a useful plant.
