Last month, a Judge ruled that Mehserle would not receive a fair trial in all of Alameda county, and now State court officials have recommended Los Angeles and San Diego counties to host the trial. Is this what we call fair and just? Why move this trial to a county where the residents have no direct connection to the case?
For anyone who is from, or who has lived in Southern California, it is almost as if you are talking about two separate states, when compared to Northern California. There is a distinct feel to each community, each has its own particular guidelines, norms, and even culture within neighborhoods. Will the community of Southern California care about the outcome of the trial with the same intensity that the Oakland community will? It is doubtful, considering the fact that they do not have a stake in the outcome as we do here.
Unfortunately, we the community have no say so when it comes to where the trial will be held, and our input is not required nor desired. But we can make our voices heard, make our displeasure known. We must stand together as a community and continue to send our prayers to Oscar Grant's family.
