6 Outta 9 w/ Beats is an older album from Adam Balbo that was released in 2006. It features Balbo's trademark wit, even in the unusual sounding album title. Why is the album called 6 Outta 9 w/ Beats? Because six out of the nine songs on this album feature a casio keyboard delivering drum beats.
In addition to the beats, Balbo also makes use of some of the keyboard's effects such as sounding like a flute. Mixed with Dylan inspired guitar, harmonica, and vocal stylings, this album offers a very quirky, lo-fi feel. The different beats cause Balbo to stretch outside typical folk song rhythms, such as in the opening number "The Samba Blues."
"The Samba Blues" showcases Balbo's unusual, humorous metaphors, as in the memorable line "Just when I thought that I was immune, you coughed all over me and now I think I got it too. I'm the latest victim of the Samba Blues." The idea of a case of the blues as a catching disease is brilliant. Balbo carries the metaphor through to the end of the song.
Another number, such as track three, "Talkin' Bush" is an angry, funny rant about George Bush.
All the songs are good, "Long, Quick Tango" is catchy but features some graphic lyrics. By far, my favorite song off this album is "Let's Feel Terrible Together." Balbo has some great lyrics like "Let's feel terrible together. We can stand in each other's shoes. Talk right past each other while we trade disparaging news." Balbo's voice is emotional and conveys a depth of sadness that is touching and captivating.
If you're into folk, Dylan, and low-fi casio beats, be sure to check out this album.
