Yoga is an ancient art, dating back 5000 years to India. In those ancient times, Yoga was thought to be a spiritual practice. Over the last 50 years or so, since Yoga has become mainstream in America, it has become so much more. More than just a spiritual practice, Yoga promotes flexibility, balance and strength, both inside and out. The word "yoga" means to "yolk together" or "unite".
Yoga has unlimited benefits. Some of these benefits include rejuvenating and detoxifying the body, stress reduction, core stability, flexibility, balance, strenght, improved posture, improved circulation, concentration, self-awareness, self-esteem and total body toning.
It also has immeasurable benfefits to your overall health. It helps the heart, reduces hypertension, boosts the immune system, reduces depression, helps arthritis, asthma, back pain, insomnia and multiple sclerosis. New studies also show Yoga to reduce hot flashes in menopausal women.
Some people question Yoga's capablities and whether it is a fad. This ancient practice is no fad, but it is indeed a practice. Yoga is something you learn, first beginning with the breath and moving into postures as your body is ready. All too many people jump into a class and become overwhelmed with what they can and can not do. Yoga requires patience and understanding of your body. It is not a competition among others, but rather a practice that you develop within yourself.
