Getting kids interested in gardening is easy, keeping them interested is another! Our kids love two things about gardening: planting and picking. They like the idea of helping out at the start of the season, planting seeds and seedlings and then of course, reaping the rewards. We try to keep them involved throughout the season as it helps teach them to be better gardeners, it gets them outdoors, they learn responsibility and their help makes the job easier for the adults.
As our kids age, they get their own garden area which they are responsible for. They can grow whatever they like it their area but it must be cared for solely by them. Their gardens have ranged from all flowers to pumpkins, to cherry tomatoes, to strawberries to snap peas to a variety of flowers, herbs and vegetables.
Here is a list of five things even young kids can do to help in the garden:
Composting
Kids can carry kitchen materials out to the compost pile as well as turn the material. This is a lot of fun if you have a crank one!
Watering
My kids always liked to water, either with the hose or watering can. If they are using the hose, you will need to keep an eye on them as all ages can get into trouble with a hose!
Grass Inspector
This is a fun job for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Give them a bag and have them run all around the yard picking up any debris before mowing. Sticks, rocks etc. can be added to the bag while dog and kid toys can safely be put away and not eaten by the lawn mower!
Seeds
Not only can kids help out with planting seeds, they can also help gather them. They can gather the seeds (celosia, moon flower etc) and then months later enjoy planting them.
Picking
This is of course, the prize job! Picking cherry tomatoes, peas, beans and berries is not only easy for a child, but tasty as well.
Kids and gardens are a great combo and taking the time to introduce them when they are young may lead to a lifetime love of gardening. And that is a good thing!
